Randall "Randy" Edward Strand, age 73, of Clarinda, IA, entered into eternal peace Tuesday, November 9, 2010 with his children at his side. Funeral services were held Monday, November 15, 2010 at 10:30 a.m. at the Ritchie Funeral Home, Clarinda, Iowa with Pastor Daryl Tompkins of St. John Lutheran Church officiating. Visitation with the family was held 2-4 p.m. Sunday, November 14 at the funeral home. Randy was buried in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Lamoni, Iowa. Memorials may be given in his name. Memories and condolences may be shared with the family on our website at, www.ritchiefuneralhome.com under Obituaries. Arrangements were entrusted to the Ritchie Funeral Home of Clarinda, Iowa.

Randall Edward Strand was born March 11, 1937 at Worthington, Minnesota to Howard Elmer Strand and Genevieve "Jean" (Johnson) Strand. His family moved to Humboldt, IA where Randy attended school and graduated from Humboldt High School in 1955. Upon graduation he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in the fall of 1956 and was stationed in Okinawa. Following his honorable discharge in 1958, he and Velma Jensen courted and were married September 10, 1960 in Iowa Falls, Iowa. They were blessed with four children, Howard, Sheila, Jennifer, and Rachael.

Randy attended the University of IA, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Political Science with a minor in Sociology. He continued his education with a year of law school. After college, he moved to central Iowa working for several businesses. In June of 1967, the family moved to Clarinda, Iowa where he was administrator for West Heights Manor Care Center. Randy and partners became owners of several nursing homes throughout the Midwest. In 1977, he acquired several farms in the Clarinda area, farming with his son until 1989. In 1990, he purchased a bar that became Kelly's Place; now the The Hunter's Den.

Randy was a member of the Bethesda Lutheran Church, NRA life member, Safari Club International, Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, Ducks Unlimited, just to name a few. Randy was always looking for a challenge and took life by the horns. He had many colorful adventures and interests. Hunting was his passion; fulfilling his life's dream of three safaris in Africa. He was inducted in the Hunter's Hall Of Fame in 1985. Randy was also a pilot and a member of the Civil Air Patrol, a musician, a horseman, Golden Glove boxer in the high school and also boxed for the U.S. Marine Corps.

Preceding Randy in death were his father, Howard E. Strand and his brother, Justin Bradley Strand.

Survivors include his mother, Jean Strand of Branson, MO; son, Howard Strand and wife Peggy of Littleton, Colorado; daughters, Sheila Strand of Cheyenne, WY, Jennifer Thomas and husband Greg of Gillette, Wyoming, Rachael Egging and husband Phil of Pella, IA; grandchildren Nolan and Claire Thomas and Maren and Matthew Egging; brothers, Richard Strand and wife Alberta of Lakewood, CA and Rodney Strand of Kenosha, Wisconsin; sister, Nancy Hendrickson and husband Bill of Hollister, Missouri; nieces; nephew and many friends.

Randy was a free spirit and lived by his own rules.
He will be greatly missed by his family and many friends.
May God grant comfort and peace to those who mourn his passing.

Jennifer - I was very sorry to hear of your Dad's passing. My memory isn't great, but I do have some very vivid memories of sleep-overs at your house and they were never dull!! Jack and I are so sorry to hear about Randy's passing. You are all in our thoughts and prayers. Dick, thank you so much for keeping us informed of Randy.He and Jack visited on the phone occasionally, since we weren't able to get together. Reliving their young experiences over again. Velma and family, our condolances at this time. Randy was such an intellegent fella that did a lot in his lifetime for this community. He raised 3 beautiful children - spent countless hours helping others when they needed help and dearly loved getting out on the tractor with his floppy brimmed hat. The Strand's were one of the 1st families we came to know very well when we moved to Clarinda in 1976. Randy's wise words of wisdom sure helped us with our personal and business life years ago.
